GUIDE

Prepare for your specialist consultation

Make the most of a consultation with a clear summary and a short question list.

Write down the main reason for your consultation, when the problem began and what you hope to understand. Keep the first enquiry brief; detailed medical documents can be requested through an agreed secure channel.

Organise reports in date order and retain the original files. Ask whether the specialist needs imaging files as well as written reports and whether translations are required.

Prepare questions about the diagnosis, further tests, possible approaches and the next decision. Take notes during the consultation and ask for unfamiliar terms to be explained.

At the end, confirm who will send the written plan, when an estimate will be available and who to contact with questions. A consultation request does not reserve a treatment date.
