Start with the same scope
Write down the proposed procedure, destination, provider and dates before comparing prices. A starting price is a useful first question, but it does not tell you whether tests, implants, medicines or follow-up are included. Ask each provider to quote against the same information. Keep the original estimate and its expiry date so that later changes are easy to spot.
Make three separate totals
Keep hospital charges, travel expenses and money for unexpected changes separate. For hospital charges, list consultations, investigations, procedure fees, room category, medicines and any rehabilitation. For travel, include flights, visas, transfers, accommodation, meals and a companion’s expenses. For changes, ask what an extra hospital night, hotel night or changed flight would cost. Choose a reserve that you can afford rather than assuming the lowest estimate will cover everything.
Use a comparison sheet
Create one column for each provider and these rows: proposed care; included services; excluded services; currency; total estimate; deposit; balance due date; refund terms; expected time away; and follow-up arrangements. Mark unanswered items as ‘awaiting confirmation’, not zero. A lower total with several unanswered items is not yet a like-for-like comparison.
Check how payments will work
Ask who receives each payment and whether invoices come from the hospital, accommodation provider or coordinator. Confirm the currency, exchange-rate basis and any card or transfer charges with the relevant payment provider. Obtain written cancellation and refund terms before paying. Independently confirm payment details through a known contact if bank instructions change.
Agree what happens if the plan changes
Ask who explains additional charges and how you will approve them. Find out whether unused services are refundable and how refunds are processed. Keep a named contact for billing questions as well as your care contact. Review the budget again after the treating team has assessed you; the original enquiry estimate may no longer match the agreed plan.
